On the inside of the “Little Book – Big Laughs” Knock-Knock book, there’s a tribute to UHCCF’s very own Tom Barbera. It reads: “This book has been affectionately dedicated to Tom Barbera. As UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation’s founder and long-time National Board member, Tom’s leadership, enthusiasm and sense of humor has been critical to the Foundation’s success. Thank you, Tom. Keep smiling!”
It’s a fitting “hats off” to a very special man who recently retired from the UHCCF National Board, where he served from 2007 to 2015. For those 8 years, Mr. Barbera provided valuable leadership to the Foundation from its inception to UHCCF’s 10,000th grant milestone.
Tom has been an inspiration and an anchor, helping the Foundation achieve its mission to significantly enhance either the clinical condition or the quality of life for children who are not fully covered by their families’ available commercial health insurance plans.
Prior to his post on the UHCCF National Board, Tom was Regional CEO for UnitedHealthcare's Mid-Atlantic region, where he did an excellent job before retiring from that position in 2006. Before that, he was the CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board of Mid-Atlantic Medical Services, Inc (MAMSI), a regional, publicly traded managed health care company. While there, Tom was the founding father of the MAMSI Children's Foundation, which was the precursor to the UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation.
UHCCF wishes Tom Barbera a long and fulfilling retirement, and will always owe a debt of gratitude for his experience, wisdom and dedication to helping others through healthcare.
